Build a heart competition

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR THE BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION’S Build-a-Heart COMPETITION 2012

1.       The British Heart Foundation’s Build-a-Heart Competition to create a functioning model of the human heart (the Competition) is open to all people aged between 11 and 18 at 30th November 2012. 

2.       The British Heart Foundation (BHF) reserves the right to verify the age of entrants.

3.       The closing date for the Competition is 30th November 2012 and all entries must be received by BHF at yheart@bhf.org.uk or Build-a-heart, British Heart Foundation, Greater London House, 180 Hampstead Road, London, NW1 7AW by this date in order to qualify for entry. For group entries, group size must not exceed 10 individuals. There is no limit to the number of groups that can apply within a school or youth club.

4.       All entries must be in the form of a set of instructions (no longer than two sides of A4) showing how to make the model along with a link to a YouTube video of the working model or a set of between three and five still images (printed or digital files) of the working model.

5.       All the entries will be reviewed after the closing date by a panel of BHF staff, healthcare professionals and medical experts and those entries that, in their opinion, best fit the design criteria (demonstrates pumping of blood by the heart into a circulatory system and shows how the heart is affected by narrowing of the blood vessels through a model that can be easily copied by people aged between 11 and 14 if provided with instructions) of the Competition will be selected as winners by the Panel, whose decision will be final.

6.       The winning entries will be notified prior to any announcement by 1st January 2013 by telephone or the email address provided for notification.  The names of the winning entries will be available on the BHF website at yheart.net/buildaheart from 1st February 2013 until 31st March 2013.

7.       The prizes in the Competition are:

a.       First prize – the winning entry will be used, having been adapted as necessary, to create a kit intended for use by people aged between 11 and 14 across the United Kingdom which the BHF will offer free of charge to the public through the BHF website (bhf.org.uk).  Each member of the winning group will receive £25 of Amazon gift vouchers. In addition, the first prize winners, and their class or up to 20 members of their youth club, will be offered the opportunity to visit their nearest BHF-funded research laboratory and have the opportunity to see heart research being conducted.

b.      Second prize – the school or youth club of the second-placed group will receive a Nintendo Wii games console.

8.       All winners may be required to become involved in future publicity, and photographs of the winners may be used in press and promotional material/activity.  All winners agree to the use of their name, the name of their educational establishment or youth club, where relevant, and information relating to their entry, for the purpose of acknowledging their entry as the basis or inspiration for any kit, either in publicity material, or on the kit or its packaging. 

9.       The winners acknowledge that no guarantee is given by the BHF in respect of the level of uptake of any kit by third parties or commercialisation of the kit.

10.   By entering the Competition you hereby grant BHF an irrevocable, royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide licence to use and reproduce your entry in whole or in part, either as submitted or modified, for any purpose and the right to sub-licence or assign these rights.  Copyright in any promotional material or any intellectual property rights attaching to any adaptation of any entry by the BHF or their agents will belong to BHF.

11.   The Competition Prizes are not transferable and there is no cash alternative.

12.   BHF reserves the right to change, suspend or cancel the Competition at any time.

13.   All entrants acknowledge and agree that no payment will be made to them by BHF or any other third party in respect of their entries or any subsequent use or selection of any entries, including any winning entries.

14.   No entries received by BHF will be returned to entrants and disposal of all entries will be at the discretion of BHF.

15.   English law governs the Competition and by entering, entrants agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

16.   By entering, entrants agree to grant BHF permission to use his or her name, likeness and biographical information for advertising, promotional and publicity purposes.

17.   BHF does not accept and is not responsible for any lost or delayed entries.  BHF reminds entrants of the nature and limitations of the internet and are not responsible for any technical malfunctions or any communications system or computer hardware or software issue that may affect BHF satisfactorily receiving any Competition entry.  All lost, damaged or incomplete entries will be deemed invalid entries.

18.   By entering the Competition you warrant that the designs and materials you have submitted are your own invention, are original and have not been copied.

19.   Any personal data relating to entrants will be used solely in accordance with current UK data protection law and will not be disclosed to a third party outside of the BHF group without the individual’s prior consent, save that all entrants agree to the disclosure of their name and, where relevant, the name of their school or educational establishment if their entry is used or referred to in publicity or for any other purpose.
